Garbage Man acquiring a WHAMMY!

A WHAMMY! is an in-game achievement that made its debut in Vigilante 8. To acquire Whammies, the player must successfully hit the opponent with two of their selected weapons in a combo attack, or just using certain Special Weapons in rapid succession. When Whammies are shown on-screen, they will display a WHAMMY! along with the amount of times the Whammy multiplies its worth, for example: '2 x WHAMMY!'. The amount a Whammy multiplies itself depends on the amount of hits an opponent takes with either strategy of receiving Whammies, with Slick Clyde's or Astronaut Bob O.'s Special Weapons being the easiest to acquire Whammies with.

Whammies multiply the damage of the last weapon hit. For example, if you shot the Bruiser Cannon first then afterwards you shot the Bull's Eye Rockets, the rockets will deal bonus damage.

In Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense, players are given the ability to Whammy CPU opponents by hitting their own weapon attacks along with an ally's on the same opponent in Co-op mode, which applies even if both players hit them with the same weapon. However, this mechanic does not apply at all for players on the same team hitting another player on another team in the multiplayer game modes team and smear.

Vigilante 8: Arcade[]

Whammies make a return in Vigilante 8: Arcade with an added twist. Every time the player achieves a Whammy, Salvage Points will fly out of the opponent's vehicle, the amount depends on the multiplicity of the Whammy. For example, a '1 x Whammy' rewards the player with two Salvage Points, while a '2 x Whammy' rewards the player with three Salvage Points, and so on. The player can also obtain an Achievement for correctly executing Whammies in-game.

Trivia[]

  • In the first game, John Torque's and Dave's, and Beezwax's special weapon damage increase (as well as an increase in knockback as a result) for the rest of the attack if they whammy for it's first hit.
  • In Vigilante 8, and Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense, Dave's, Dave's Cultsmen's, and Beezwax's special weapons only whammy for the first hit.
    • Each UFO from Dave's and Dave's Cultsmen's Special Weapon can Whammy on their first hit, but only on their first hit; any later hits will not Whammy, regardless if their first hit had gotten a Whammy or not. If one UFO hits, another weapon hits, and a different UFO summoned from the same user all hit quickly enough, it can count as a '2 x Whammy', but not from UFO to UFO (unless hit is delivered with a Co-op ally's in 2nd Offense with Dave Cultsmen's Super Invasion specifically).
  • Flying All Star Trio's Blazin' Glory and Clyde's Chain Lightning Special Weapons have the ability to Whammy off of themselves, being the only weapons in the series to have this ability.
