Stall is a mechanic in each Vigilante 8 title, where a vehicle will be unable to drive using the gas when hit by whatever has the ability to stall. The player must press or hold the gas in order to start their vehicle's engine again; however, this varies depending on version or game. In the Playstation version of Vigilante 8, the player must time the gas by pressing and holding it for a certain amount each time in order to start their vehicle's engine back up. The gas can also only be held, but doing so will have it take longer. However, in the Nintendo 64 version, the player now instead only has to hold the gas to do so, with it taking much less time to start the vehicle's engine back up; this carries over to every version in Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense. In Vigilante 8: Arcade, the player instead must start their vehicle's engine back up from a stall by tapping the gas; each tap brings the vehicle's engine closer to starting back up.
What inflicts it[]
Stall is inflicted in V8 by chance by the pool when the vehicle is stationary in it in Casino City, and the water waves in Valley Farms. It is also inflicted by chance by Slick Clyde's White Lightning, of which is also guaranteed to lock the vehicle's ability to basic fire for a short time; however, combos can still be used during this time.
It is inflicted in V8: 2nd Offense by a vehicle being stationary whilst also low enough in water, and the nuclear reactor when it explodes.
In V8: Arcade, it is inflicted by the water waves, planes, and automatic field sprayers in Farmland.
In V8, and V8: Arcade, it is inflicted by Chassey Blue's Gridlock. In V8, it is inflicted by chance, but in V8: Arcade, it is guaranteed, and it also spins any vehicle hit.
In all three games, it is inflicted by Molo's Smog Check. In V8, and V8: 2nd Offense, it is inflicted by chance.
